What Bruno Fernandes said on Donny van de Beek Man Utd display in Liverpool FA Cup win

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes heaped praise on Donny van de Beek after the Dutchman was handed a rare start against Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday. Van de Beek has struggled to find his feet since joining from Ajax.

Van de Beek started just his tenth game for Manchester United on Sunday.

The Dutch midfielder was named in the number ten role by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the visit of the Premier League champions.

He’s struggled to get going since making the move from Ajax last summer, but looked promising against Liverpool.

Van de Beek played a few nice passes in behind the Reds’ defence and looked sharp, but was still a few steps behind the pace.

He was taken off just after the hour mark for Fernandes, who went on to fire in the winning free-kick.

Much has been made of how Solskjaer will fit Fernandes, Van de Beek and Paul Pogba into the same starting XI, with all three favouring the same position.

But speaking afterwards, the Portuguese ace insisted he was happy to see Van de Beek get some minutes in the first team.

“We have a really good squad and we have options,” Fernandes said to MUTV.

“If you look at the bench and the first XI today and the ones at home we have a really good squad, it will not be a problem if we change the team or someone is tired because we have really good players.

“Donny did a great game, playing in the position I play watching him he moves really good, he played really well. It’s important for us.

“If I was in the position of Donny I would not be happy at all but the most important is doing what he does today, coming in and helping the team.”

Fernandes’ game-winning free-kick sent United through to the fifth round of the competition, and marks a brilliant end to a week that saw them keep their place at the top of the Premier League.

And the playmaker admitted after dumping Liverpool out of the cup that the Premier League is still his priority.

“They’re all important [competitions] for us, we have to go in the same way whatever the competition,” he said.

“We play in them all to win.

“Everyone knows winning the league is more special but for us players, it’s about winning trophies and this is a trophy we want to win.”
