Salary and Allowance of a Degree Teacher in Ghana
The degree teacher in Ghana is paid a good salary plus some allowance monthly. Before we start with the issue of their salaries and allowances enjoyed, let’s first look at the categories of degree teachers we have in Ghana. There are two categories of degree teachers based on the certificate one holds. We have both basic school teachers and second-cycle school teachers who are degree teachers.

Is it only SHS teachers teacehrs who hold Degree Certificates?
No, there are basic school teachers who hold first-degree and second-degree (Masters) certificates.
The reason why these people teach at the basic school level is that they studied courses that are related to basic education. Note that, from the college, you can’t be posted to the secondary school because you studied Diploma in Basic Education course or a Degree in Basic Education Course. Therefore, they will forever teach at the basic level or work in an institution that concerns itself with basic education. For example, such teachers can be called serve in the education office or a college.
On the other hand, before one can be fully qualified to teach at the second cycle level, he or she must hold a Degree in Secondary Education Certificate from an accredited or recognized university. However, some diploma teachers who do top-up courses to acquire the above-mentioned certificate continue to teach at the basic level till they have been reposted to secondary school where their services are needed.
What is the salary of a Degree teacher in Ghana?
The salary of a degree teacher in Ghana is GHS1,987.678. A degree teacher in Ghana when employed by the Ghana Education Service (GES) is put on the rank of Principal Superintendent (PS) with an annual Gross of GHS23,852.14. kindly note that the above salary is at GRADE BASE. This means that the initial salary will keep on increasing as years pass by.
Basically, a degree teacher’s salary ranges from GHS 1,987.678 up to GHS2,500 every month. Therefore someone who was employed with the same professional qualification (certificate) and has served for some number of years will have a higher salary than the recently employed personnel.
Degree teachers are also given some yearly allowances of GHS1,200 as professional development allowances. This applies to teachers employed by the Ghana Education Service (GES).
